Ok, one of the latest things I’ve been doing is preparing for teaching residencies by observing classroom teachers. I find myself using a text/image style that kinda merges comic frames and sketchnoting. I’m teaching both of those styles this year…

OK, both as an artist/thinker and as a teacher, I will be blending/investigating linkages between these two text/image strategies this winter and spring. As someone who has read Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics and delved into Visual Notetaking and Sketchnoting, I’m fascinated and a bit flumoxed also trying to contrast and compare.

Both arrange text and images in a rectangle to…Read More

I am reading a remarkable book called The Book of Trees, Visualizing Branches of Knowledge by Manuel Lima. It’s part history of tree as way to organize information dating back to pre-history, and part analysis of computer and logic modeling. The book makes the point that trees as a metaphor of a central idea emerging from roots and then extending via branches….is central to our way of…Read More

In mid-November, I began teaching a unit integrating Sketchnote techniques with the study of poetry, in collaboration with an 8th grade Language Arts teacher. I adapted some of the techniques to help students listen to and interpret poetry. Here are some of my models, often showing several versions of the same text. (source texts included Harlem by Walter Dean Myers, Sunday Mornings by…Read More

OK, I’ve been waiting for the perfect time to start this log…and it never arrives. Going to do some catch-up here, so multiple posts with different sets of sketchnotes attached.

This first set was created when observing the 8th grade LA teacher I was about to collaborate with.
