Oh! I was also wanted to learn how to get overhead shots of sketchnotes without getting the tripod in frame.
My solution this weekend was to use this funky wood clamp thing I found at a thrift store.
I do not know its original use. And I have to be careful not to over tighten the screws when I slide in my iPhone.
The paint cans add weight to the base.
The end result gives me much more space then when I have tried to use a tripod.
Of course on a phone the video function does not record as wide as the photo function. So space in the frame is a premium. Plus I enjoyed the freedom of not bumping into the tripod legs.
